Betrayals of Jesus

Mark 14, Luke 22, Matthew 27

The Plan to Kill Jesus

Two days before the Passover meal, leading Hebrew priest and teachers met. At the meeting, they were trying to find a way to arrest Jesus and kill him. Later, one of Jesus' twelve apostles, Judas Iscariot, went to talk to the leading priests. Judas wanted to be paid for giving Jesus to them. The leading priests agreed to pay Judas. They were pleased with this plan.

At the Passover Feast

While Jesus and his twelve apostles were eating the Passover meal, Jesus said:

I tell you the truth. One of you will give me to my enemies--one of you eating with me now. [Mark 14:17]

Each of the apostles said that he would not give Jesus to his enemies. Then Jesus said:

The Son of Man must go and die. The Scriptures say this will happen. But how terrible it will be for the person who gives the Son of Man to be killed. It would be better for that person if he had never been born.
[Mark 14:21]

Jesus then told Judas, The thing that you will do—do it quickly! [John 13:27]. Because Judas kept their money the other apostles thought that Jesus sent Judas to buy something more for the meal.

Later in the Passover meal, Jesus blessed the bread and the wine. He shared the bread and the wine with his apostles commanding them to Do this to remember me. [Luke 22:19] At the end of the meal, they sang a hymn and went to the Gethsemane Garden at the base of the Mount of Olives.

All Fall Away

Before leaving for Gethsemane, Jesus told the apostles how they would all be tested by Satan. Jesus prayed that Simon Peter would not lose his faith, and that Simon Peter would, Help your brothers be stronger when you come back to me. [Luke 22:32] Peter told Jesus, Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you. I will even die with you! [Luke 22:33] Then Jesus told Peter:

“Peter, before the rooster crows tonight, you will say you don’t know me. You will say this three times!”
[Luke 22:24]

When Jesus and his apostles got to Gethsemane, he ask them to pray for power against evil. Jesus went a little way away from his apostles. Jesus prayed to God in these words:

“Father, if it is what you want, then let me not have this cup of suffering. But do what you want, not what I want.”
[Luke 22:42]

The apostles were sad and tired. They could not stay awake. When Jesus returned to his apostles, they were asleep. They had not pray with Jesus.

Arrest in Gethsemane

While Jesus was talking to the apostles, a crowd came up. Judas was leading the crowd. Before leading the crowd, Judas told them his plan. Judas would kiss Jesus. Then the crowd could arrest Jesus. Judas went to Jesus and kissed him. Some soldiers in the crowd arrested Jesus.
[Mark 14:43-46]

Peter's Denial

After Jesus was arrested, the crowd took him to the house of a high priest. Jesus was question by the high priest in the house.

Peter followed the crowd. Some soldiers were in the crowd. They gathered outside of the house. The soldiers made a fire to keep warm. Peter joined the soldiers beside the fire. A serving girl saw Peter.

She looked closely at Peter’s face and said, “This man was also with him!”

But Peter said this was not true. He said, “Girl, I don’t know him.”

A short time later, another person saw Peter and said, “You are also one of them.”

But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”

About an hour later, another man insisted, “It is true! This man was with him. He is from Galilee!”
[Luke 22:56-60]

After Peter spoke the third time, a cock crowed. Peter remembered what Jesus told him. Peter had denied Jesus three times before the cock crowed. Peter looked to Jesus. Peter saw that Jesus was looking at him. Peter was very sad. Peter cried and his heart hurt.
[Luke 22:54-62]

Repentance

What did Peter and Judas do after the betrayals?

This is what Peter did. As soon as the cock crowed, Peter looked to Jesus. Peter saw that Jesus was looking at him.

Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter.
[Luke 22:61]

This is what Judas did. The morning after Jesus was arrested, the leaders in the crowd decided to kill Jesus. When Judas saw that the leaders wanted to kill Jesus, Judas was sorry for betraying Jesus. Judas went to the leaders.

Judas said, “I sinned. I gave you an innocent man to be killed.”

The leaders answered, “What is that to us? That’s your problem, not ours.”

When the leaders turn their backs on Judas, he throw their money at them. Then Judas left and killed himself.
